Basement Ceiling

Basement Ceiling

A basement can be defined as a floor, or several stories of a building, which is completely or partially located below the ground floor. While many structures do have basements, some buildings do not necessarily have basements. Those houses with basements usually contain the water heater, air conditioning system, and furnace. Basements improve land utilization and energy consumption. They also serve to provide more functional space for various uses. The ceiling of the basement needs to be constructed keeping certain specifications in mind.

Construction of Basement Ceiling

The basic basement ceiling construction is generally framed to allow space for electrical wires, water pipes, and ducting. A homeowner can choose to use drywall to cover the ceiling of the basement. A suspended ceiling can also be constructed. However, the drywall is a better option because it provides a more home-like look when compared to the commercial-looking suspended ceilings. Drywall is also less expensive due to the low cost of the material used. Additionally, drywall provides space to install a wooden frame. Installing the drywall vertically makes the pieces smaller, lighter, and easier to construct. A solid backing for the ceiling requires good furring and framed boxes. Another feasible option is acoustic ceiling tiles; these are easy to cut, small in size, and easy to handle. Ceiling tiles can be installed by simply stapling them to the furring strips. It is possible to install the drywall and suspended ceilings as a do-it-yourself project with no professional help required.

Basement Ceiling Decoration

Homeowners can decorate the basement ceiling to add an aesthetic appeal to the basement. Homeowners with tropical or cottage-styled homes can hang bamboo from the beams to extend the motifs. The bamboo can be painted for a realistic look. Homeowners may opt to cover the basement ceiling with fabric to give it a shirred look. The fabric can be gathered around the center of the basement ceiling or hung from one side of the room to the other. For homeowners with a long and thin basement, it is recommended that the fabric be gathered along the width of the basement, serving to expand the room visually. For a more modern and trendy look, homeowners can experiment with various shades and colors of paints and wallpaper motifs to ducts and water pipes to add a personal touch. There is a variety of do-it-yourself guides available offering homeowners helpful ideas and suggestions for basement remodeling and decorating.
