Basement Design

Basement Design

If your home has an unfinished basement with enough space to be converted into a living space, you can decorate and design it to suit your personal tastes. The basement’s utilities can be walled off and the exposed pipes can be covered or rerouted to make space for a complete livable room conversion. Replacing old or damaged surfaces such as walls, ceilings, and floors might be all you need to tackle to make a room look great. Installing new windows or decreasing the size of the existing windows to make the basement brighter or darker may also be considered when designing your basement.

Tips for Basement Design

Compared to the other rooms, the basement may prove to be more difficult to design. To add more light to the basement area, install windows or adequate lighting if there’s a lack of natural light. Also, adding French doors instead of solid doors can assist with maximizing light. The basement’s columns and posts can be removed as practical. If necessary, new walls can be installed to conceal the posts and columns wherever possible. By using horizontal design elements, you can make the room look more spacious. Water resistant flooring such as tiles, vinyl, or area rugs should be used because basement areas are prone to excessive water build-up, mold, and mildew.

Installing a basement dehumidifier or new heating system complete with its own thermostat to keep the room warm during winters are also basement design considerations. Since the basement is beneath the ground, the temperature remains constant throughout the year. During summer the basement is cooler and winter it is colder than other rooms of your home; therefore, separate heating system is required to heat the area.

Basement Design with Bright Colors

Adding bright colors can liven up any room. The walls and ceiling of the basement should be designed with bright color schemes since this is the darkest room in your home. Use the varying bright shades of blue, orange, yellow or green for a nice contrasting look. Also consider the upholstery of the basement furniture, bright fabrics or throws are perfect for a dull-colored item. If there is already a couch in the basement, add a bright slipcover to easily change the look. Use unique and light colored rugs on the floor to add texture and variety to the floor. Also decorate the walls with attractive art work; hang the arts and pictures slightly lower than those found in any of the other rooms.

Decorating the basement is simple, easy, and cost-effective. The basement can be used as a playroom, exercise area, guest space and office room. When the need for more living space arises, you can by-pass the attic, forget the backyard and turn to the basement.
