Basement Homebuilder
Building a new home requires many choices and decisions to be made in the process. So if you’re planning to build a new home, be prepared to spend an endless number of hours looking at options and making final selections. Homeowners have a lot of options and choices when it comes to cabinets, faucets, light fixtures and floor coverings such as different styles, colors, finishes, and price ranges. Deciding on building a basement as an extension of your home may be among one of the decisions you will have to make. Basements not only allow for extra room and storage space, but it can also increase the value of your home.
Basics of Basement Homebuilder
Basements provide many benefits to the homeowner: a cool area in the summer, extra space to be converted to a guest bedroom or home office, and makes for an efficient storage area. Drainage is very important in the construction of basements and crawl spaces. Generally slabs and crawl spaces are less expensive than building full basements, especially in conditions where there are a great number of rocks to be removed; however in some areas it is difficult to build a basement because of the presence of solid rocks. As a homeowner, if you need a lot of storage or want extra basement space, then a crawl space or a slab is definitely not the type of foundation you should consider.
Building a Home without a Basement
If you decide you don’t want a basement added to your home, there are several things you should take into consideration. The wiring and plumbing for your home should be in the walls or ceilings. Space is also required for the furnace and water heater in the home. Water pipes should be insulated, especially if they are in the attic. In slab foundations there is a smaller chance for water and outside gases to leak. Typically, slabs are lower to the ground and have fewer steps to go up or down; this is an advantage for the elderly or people who have difficulty climbing stairs. There are several potential drawbacks to slab foundations. Any cracks can cause long-term problems and are more difficult to repair. Soil movement and tree roots can lead to cracks in the slab. Slabs homes are also more prone to insect problems.
