Remodeling an Existing Basement

Basements are an extension of your home, only just that they are designed to be under your house and not attached to it. As a homeowner you can hone your designing skills and remodel your basement to nicely complement the rest of your home. Basement remodeling can bring about aesthetic as well as practical uses to all the extra space below the house.

Basement Design Basics

There are some important things to consider before designing a basement. First, the ceiling should properly accommodate for wires, gas lines, and simple access points. The ceiling can be soft or hard depending upon the number of times it would require construction. Next come the walls, they need designed properly with regard to concrete or stud walls. Basements tend to be smelly because of excess moisture that creeps in, however, walls with poly sheets sealed tightly and waterproofing can help prevent this to a great extent. The basement floors can be designed using stone or tiles, vinyl or carpet and even wood, provided the basement is kept dry at all times.

Designing the Look of the basement

The overall look and feel of the basement should be designed keeping in mind the ultimate use of the space. A basement can be used for entertainment and relaxation. The space could also be converted into a home office, guest bedroom, or used for storage. The best way to decide what the basement should be used for is to take the design of the entire house into consideration, and then decide accordingly. Adequate lighting, bright colors added to the walls, and other room décor should all be done keeping the interior décor consistent throughout the home. Acquiring professional help to do the remodeling is advisable.
