Basement Repair

Basement Repair

Basement repair is a continuous process for houses in low lying areas, especially those located in flood-prone areas. However, as a homeowner, you can reduce the extent of damage caused by leaks or floods to the basement with the use of proper sealants and waterproofing your home. Many basement building companies also provide professional help for repairing existing basements and recommend ways to properly maintain a basement. Basement repair may become expensive if the required work is not performed in time or immediately after a flood.

Repairing Basement Foundation

There are several repairs you may need to make to basement foundations. One of these may require waterproofing as well as repair to fill cracks and stop leaks. Structural changes such as wall position, ducts and pipes and concrete work may also be required for repairing basements. Leaks and moisture should be prevented because they both can lead to mold and bad odors. By sealing walls, foundations, and floors mold and mildew growth can be stopped and further damage to the basement can be prevented. Sealing cracks can also prevent bad odors that are generally associated with basements. If the task of repairing your basement foundation requires the help of a professional, experts can be hired to complete the job.

Repairing Basement Walls

Basement walls are the first to receive damage after a flood. Excessive water can leak through the basement’s wall joints and unsealed cracks. Quick fix seals may help stem the leakage; however, they are not the ultimate solution to the problem. The basement wall may also be affected by water being pumped out rapidly after a flood. The walls may get pushed up causing structural damage to the basement. Repairs must be made immediately after assessing the damage. These repairs could include fixing and sealing cracks, or repairing the entire wall.

Repairing Basement Floors

A flood can be the cause of settled or heaved floors in the basement. Settled or heaved floors are difficult to repair; therefore, the best repair method is to replace them completely. Repair work on a basement floor can be performed once all the water has been dried out completely and the basement has been emptied. Special equipment to repair floors may be required. It is recommended that professional basement builders or experts be hired to repair basement floors.
