Basement Sump Pump

Basement Sump Pump

There is a simple solution for the annoyance of excessive water in your basement. The answer is a sump pump which can be purchased from a local hardware shop. Usually water entering into the basement comes from two locations: the cover area and basement cracks. The main purpose of the basement sump pump is to collect water spontaneously when the water is directed toward it.

Basement Sump Pump Features

The basement sump pump not only is the last defense against flooding but it also has several benefits and features. Sump pumps do not cause messy blockages in the basement. Sump pumps also do not damage furniture items or carpeted flooring. The basement area can remain clean and dry by simply using a sump pump.

How to Check the Sump Pump

There are several steps you should take in checking the sump pump. First, the cover should be removed and water poured into the sump tank. Second, watch for the "float" to rise and trigger the pump. Once the pump is started, the water level quickly lowers and the float shuts off the pump. If you encounter any problems, it will be related to the float. A repositioning of the pump usually solves the problem. If the problem continues, the float may need to be replaced. If the pump fails to shut off when the water level decreases to the bottom of the sump tank, a new float is needed.

Significance

The location of the sump pump should be at the lowest point of the basement, in front of the sump hole. From the top of the sump, the PVC plastic pipe should be followed until the hook into a larger drain line. A sump pump should be tested by filling the sump hole with water. The pump has a mechanical switch that senses when the water reaches a certain level and then turns itself on automatically - it should then clear most of the water from the pit, shutting off once the water drops below a certain level. The floor should have been designed to lean slightly towards the sump hole. Obstacles such as walls or poor design can get in the way, therefore you may have to help jumpstart the sump pump if the water gets deep, but it should take over from there.
